Peel Health has traced the source of complaints received from residents of a website accepting reservations for COVID-19 vaccines that appeared to be bogus.
On a December 22 press conferenceRegion of Peel Medical Officer of Health Dr Lawrence Loh has informed the public of reports of fake websites claiming to be portals where Peel residents can book vaccine appointments.
“We are aware of some websites claiming to reserve vaccines in Peel Region. At this time, we are investigating the nature of these websites. But I want to urge people, if you make an appointment, please use the Ontario ministry portal, ”he told reporters.
The region has since traced the reports to an organization working with the Ontario government, adding that it was a mistake and that there are no safety concerns for those who attempted to make an appointment via the site.
“We have learned that the website… was launched in error by Switch Health and has since been deleted,” Peel Health said in a statement.
“The province is currently working with Switch Health to open a public immunization clinic and will share details as they become available. At full capacity, this new site will be able to accommodate up to 19,000 vaccinations per day. Appointments for the new site will be available through the provincial reservation system, ”the statement said.
Loh also said the region is currently reserving COVID-19 booster injections until February 2022 due to high demand. Therefore, walk-in vaccinations at clinics in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon are currently restricted to people who receive their first or second dose only. Boosters and vaccinations for children 5 to 11 years old should be booked in advance.
“I also want to urge our community, where possible, to help immunize our population over 50. We know this population is most at risk if they don’t get a booster before the Omicron wave comes, ”he said.
Loh urged young residents under the age of 50 already vaccinated with two doses not to book boosters until the area can increase capacity in the coming weeks.
